BIOGRAPHY
Ai started her athletic career as a swimmer at Junior high school. When she enrolled in high school she showed a talent for athletics, however in her second year she decided to move to triathlon as it provided an opportunity to compete on the world stage. In 2002 she won the Asian junior championship title and that was the first year being coached by Hideki Yamane. Since then she has been dreaming of an Olympic gold medal and began to train very hard in order to make it happen.
2005 was a successful year for Ai when she was ranked number one in the national rankings for the first time. Ai became an Olympian at Beijing in 2008 where she finished 17th and then 39th at 2012 London games. In 2015 Ai capped a record-breaking season as the only women in Japanese triathlon history to win the national championship title four times. Ai has qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with her 8th place finish at ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Chicago and by capturing the 2015 Asian Championship title.
